Byzantine Castle of Rentina: Hidden in the Forest

June 12, 2006

Field notes from documenting the sprawling medieval walls and church ruins of Rentina Castle.

The Castle of Rentina is situated on a steep, heavily forested ridge in northern Greece. The dense tree cover and high winds made this one of our most dangerous shoots.

The HeliCam navigated the tree line to document the stone ramparts, watchtowers, and the ruins of the Byzantine church. The orthophoto maps we generated provided a rare, unobstructed plan view of the entire acropolis layout.
