Aerial Survey of Meteora Monasteries
Conducting high-altitude aerial surveys of the Meteora monasteries for national publication and historical archival.
In 1995, we undertook a challenging aerial photography campaign to document the historic monasteries of Meteora, Greece. Commissioned for national publication and archival preservation, this project required capturing highly detailed views of the monasteries perched atop the soaring sandstone pillars.
Technical Execution
Operating in the mid-90s presented distinct challenges compared to modern drone surveys. The campaign relied on:
- Medium format cameras (6x7cm) to ensure the highest resolution and detail retention for print publication.
- Precision flight planning with crewed aircraft to maintain correct angles relative to the vertical rock faces under varying solar elevation.
- Custom mechanical vibration dampening for handheld aerial photography to avoid motion blur.
Historical Impact
The resulting photographs captured the architectural layout and vertical scale of the monasteries of Meteora with extreme clarity. These images were archived by national institutions and featured in landmark publications, providing a key digital and physical baseline of these UNESCO World Heritage monuments.
