High Dynamic Range Imaging: An Educational Guide

Understanding the science behind HDRi. Breaking down how multiple bracketed exposures resolve the limitations of digital sensors.

Digital camera sensors, especially in the mid-2000s, had a very limited dynamic range compared to the human eye. If you exposed for the shadows, the sky blew out; if you exposed for the sky, the foreground became pitch black.

In this technical study, I broke down the science of HDRi. By taking a series of bracketed exposures—ranging from underexposed to overexposed—we capture the full range of light. Blending these exposures in post-processing preserves the rich detail of textured stonework and glowing window highlights in a single cohesive print.
