Byzantine Monument Expeditions: Syria & Mystras

September 12, 2006

Capturing high-precision architectural photography of historical Byzantine monuments from the Turkish to the Jordanian borders.

Under contract with the European Center of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments, we conducted high-precision architectural and scientific photography campaigns to document historic Byzantine structures across Syria and Greece.

The Syrian Expedition (2007)

The expedition crossed Syria from the Turkish border in the north to the Jordanian border in the south. The goal was to document key monuments, ancient ruins, and fortress walls.

  • Lighting Calibration: Captured monument facades under consistent ambient light to maintain exact color profiling.
  • Topographical Mapping: Recorded architectural scales and layouts across remote desert and mountainous sites.
  • Medium & Large Format Archival: Captured high-resolution detailed exposures of structural elements, carvings, and inscriptions.

Mystras Site Documentation (2006)

In Greece, the campaign focused on the archaeological site of Mystras, capturing high-resolution photos of the Byzantine churches, palaces, and ruins climbing the steep slopes of Taygetos. The work compiled permanent archival records of the site's structural state, serving as vital source material for conservators and architectural historians.
