2D & 3D Animation for BBC's 'Byzantine Legacy'

November 15, 2002

Producing specialized time-lapse and 3D animation sequences for international broadcast documentaries and the Greek National Pavilion.

Between 2002 and 2003, while working with Spooky Entertainment, I focused heavily on motion graphics, time-lapse photography, and 3D animation.

One of the cornerstone projects during this period was contributing to the BBC England documentary "Byzantine Legacy".

Animating History

The challenge of "Byzantine Legacy" was bringing static, centuries-old artifacts and ruined architectural sites to life. My role involved creating intricate 2D and 3D animations that visually reconstructed these historical elements. We had to ensure historical accuracy while delivering the high visual fidelity required for a flagship BBC broadcast.

Time-Lapse Expertise

In addition to 3D modeling, I utilized specialized time-lapse photography techniques. This involved building custom intervalometers and motion-control rigs (an early precursor to my HeliCam R&D) to capture the passage of time over ancient sites, blending the passage of natural light with our digital reconstructions.

Other Major VFX Projects (2002-2003)

Beyond the BBC documentary, this era involved several high-profile animation contracts:

  • Expo 2008 National Pavilion: Produced a suite of 3D animations representing Greece for the national pavilion.
  • Mystic Prophecy: Created heavily stylized motion graphics and animated sequences for music videos by the German power metal band Mystic Prophecy.

This foundational period in 2D/3D animation profoundly influenced my later work. It trained my eye to think in 3D space, which became a critical skill when I eventually transitioned into aerial drone photogrammetry and the creation of centimeter-accurate digital twins of Byzantine monuments.
