Outside Broadcast Operations at the Athens 2004 Olympics

August 13, 2004

Serving as Chief Utility Supervisor for direct television broadcasts of the 2004 Olympic Games and BBC's Songs of Praise.

During the historic Athens 2004 Olympic Games, we served as Chief Utility Supervisor for live television broadcasts representing the Athens Olympic Broadcasting (AOB) organization.

Olympic & Major Broadcast Infrastructure

Live sports broadcasting required deploying reliable power, signal, and crew setups under intense operational pressure:

  • Signal Utility Logistics: Deployed and secured fiber and triax cables for cameras across Olympic venues (OAKA, Kaftanzoglio, Pancretan Stadium).
  • Tsiklitiria 2004 IAAF: Managed live utility routes and camera positioning for high-speed athletics coverage.
  • BBC Concert Broadcast: Chief utility supervisor and image shading technician for BBC England's live broadcast of "Songs of Praise" in Athens.

OB Unit Construction (2003)

Prior to the games, in 2003, we completed the construction, wiring, and installation of Greece's largest Outside Broadcast (OB) Van for OBS. Built into a semi-trailer with expandable walls, it supported 20 CCUs (Camera Control Units) and 2x 6-channel EVS systems. It was a massive technical engineering feat that formed the backbone of the region's live broadcast capabilities.
