Chasing Illusions: Photographing Anamorphic 3D Installations

January 1, 2006

Technical documentation of optical illusions and large-scale floor graphics that only make sense from a single point in space.

Anamorphic art is a fascinating exercise in perspective. From most angles, these large-scale floor projections and paintings look like distorted, stretched shapes. But stand at the exact focal point, and they resolve into stunning three-dimensional illusions.

Documenting these installations required finding that precise coordinate in space where the illusion snapped into place. I had to configure my camera elevation, focal length, and tilt to align perfectly with the artist's intended viewport. The resulting photos show both the illusion in its perfect state and the fascinating distortion seen from side angles.
